National Trust This is a rather belated thank you to you and your team for working so hard to get the flag here for us in good time. It is now flying high on top of the Corinthian Arch here at Stowe. Again our thanks Regards Ivy
Flag Making
Each flag manufactured by Flying Colours is hand finished to client specification. We are pleased to accept orders in quantities from a single flag upwards, and can meet a requirement for thousands of flags without any compromise on quality standards and workmanship.
Our flags may be handmade, appliquéd, digitally printed or screen printed depending upon client deadlines, quantities required, client budget and preferred finish.
Traditional sewn flags
National flags are most commonly sewn using MoD approved woven flag fabrics. Our national flag, the Union Flag, comprises 31 pieces of red, white and blue woven polyester flag fabric, cut and assembled by hand. This is our most requested flag. Some national flags have intricate designs/crests and these designs may be either appliquéd, or digitally printed and then sewn onto the field of the flag.
All flags unless otherwise stated are hemmed using core polyester threads, which are usually colour co-ordinated with the flag fabric. The flag is then finished with a headband which acts as a reinforced stiffener, incorporating a rope complete with a wooden toggle at the top of the flag, which is inserted into the loop in the flagpole halyard for hoisting.
Other options for finishing flags include traditional inglefield clips (these are quick release brass clips), D rings, plastic clips and loops. We will also finish your flag to your personal specification should you require us to do so.
Traditional Single sided flags – Mirror imaged flags
Most flags are manufactured in a traditional “mirror image” way reading correctly on one side and showing a perfect mirror image to the reverse. This method of manufacture results in a lightweight yet vibrant and eye-catching product.
Double sided flags
Double sided flags are not usually recommended for traditional flying and are manufactured by sewing 2 flags together, with a light barrier/blackout interlining inserted between the flags to prevent show through. In bad weather the finished flag will weigh approximately 3 times more than a traditional flag. This flag will not therefore fly well, creating unnecessary strain to the flagpole particularly when wet.
However double sided shaped flags (designed to fly on a 45 degree angled flagpole) may work well in the high street and we will be happy to discuss this option and advise.
Bespoke flags/Company Flags/Tailor made flags
There are a variety of ways to manufacture the above flags dependent upon client specification. We will advise the most appropriate method and further information is given below.
One-off bespoke flags
These may be manufactured:
a) appliqué sewn
b) digitally printed
c) sewn with an appliqued digitally printed badge/motif/shield or crest.
d) embroidered and sewn
Small quantity bespoke flags
Digitally printed flags may be the most cost effective option for small orders of up to 20 flags. More economical than hand sewing and without the set up costs of screen printing.
Large Orders
Screen printing is the standard industry solution to large orders for flags in quantities from circa 20 flags to many thousands. Screen printing can be applied to a wide range of fabrics and includes the option to print on hard wearing MoD woven polyester flag.
Table and desktop flags
The smallest flags we offer are 6” x 3” double sided flags printed onto acetate satin fabric and may be supplied with a 10” gold pin enabling the product to be displayed on wooden bases which can hold up to 7 flags comfortably.
We supply digitally printed double sided national and company flags on 6” x 3” embossed paper. These flags are more economical to manufacture than fabric flags.
Large flags
We manufacture large flags and, as an example, have produced stadium flags for Scottish Rugby at Murrayfield (the Scottish Saltaire commonly known as the St. Andrews flag).
Our digital printers can print fabrics in a single width of up to 3m. We are able to sew 3m strips together to produce flags to any size specified.
The largest Union flag flown in the United Kingdom was manufactured by Flying Colours and can be seen flying from Windsor Castle on special occasions. This Union flag measures 38’ x 19’ and was manufactured from 31 pieces of flag fabric.
